The 1969 King College men's basketball team, led by King Athletic Hall of Fame coach Al Nida, went 18-4 including a 9-1 mark in the Volunteer State Athletic Conference (VSAC). The Tornado won the VSAC East Division title, the first conference title in school history and one of two league titles under the guidance of Nida. Along with a Hall of Fame coach, the 1969 King men's basketball team also featured Hall of Fame players Ballard Lee and Randy Williams, leading the Tornado to the semifinals of the VSAC Tournament.
The Tornado averaged 90.6 points per game and scored more than 100 points at least six times throughout the season, prior to the three-point line. Their offense was efficient, shooting 52.0 percent from the floor and was led by four scorers that averaged better than 14.0 points per game. Kenny Logwood led the way with an average of 19.4 points per game while Williams followed, scoring 17.4 points per game. Butch Cobb scored 15.7 points per game and Warren Payne added an average of 14.4 points per game.
On January 23, 1969, King snapped a 35-game losing streak to Carson-Newman College, a streak that dated back to 1951. A little more than a week later, the Tornado topped Lincoln Memorial on the road for their first win in Harrogate, Tenn., since 1948. Of the four losses for the Tornado, two came by only one point, 90-89 to Kentucky Southern and 95-94 against Florida Presbyterian.
