Â
The King University Athletic Training staff includes a wide variety of individuals who apply medical and scientific knowledge to prevent, recognize, manage and rehabilitate injuries related to sport and exercise. The Athletic Training team consists of athletic trainers, physicians, and physical therapists. All of these individuals play an important role in the health and wellness of each student-athlete at King University. The Athletic Training staff works under the auspices of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society (TATS). The program is also greatly assisted by Dr. Emily Campbell M.D., the team physician and Dr. Lindsay Remy, the team orthopedic surgeon through a partnership with HMG.
What is an Athletic Trainer?Â
Certified athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergency care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.Â
Â
The statutory title of "athletic trainer" is a misnomer but is derived from the profession's historical roots. Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types of people, not just athletes participating in sports. They do not train people as personal or fitness trainers do. However, the profession continues to embrace its proud culture and history by retaining the title. In other countries, 'athletic therapist' and 'physiotherapist' are similar titles. The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) is the professional organization for certified athletic trainers and others who support athletic training. The NATA Code of Ethics states the principles of ethical behavior that should be followed in the practice of athletic training.
