NEWARK, N.J. – The King University men's volleyball team dropped their season opener Friday afternoon, 3-0 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
- The Highlanders scored five of the first six points, with AJ Drooker accounting for the King point.
- After the NJIT lead reached 13-6 and King called a timeout, the Tornado scored three straight points, pulling to 13-9.
- The Highlanders would extend the lead to 22-13 before another Tornado timeout.
- NJIT would score three of the final five points to win the set 25-15.
Second Set
- The Tornado took an early 3-2 lead on a kill by Kolten Soon and a couple of NJIT errors.
- After NJIT tied the set, King scored five in a row, with Soon getting two service aces and a kill to put King in front 8-4.
- NJIT tied the score at 10 before taking a lead in the midst of a 5-1 scoring run, taking a 14-11 lead into a timeout.
- The Highlanders would finish the set on a 10-4 run, winning 25-15 and going ahead 2-0.
Third Set
- NJIT took an early 5-2 lead before a 4-0 King scoring run saw them pull in front, 6-5.
- After the Tornado took a 12-11 lead on a Warren Davis service ace, the Highlanders scored the next four points, taking a 15-12 lead.
- The lead reached 23-16, where Grayson Stoudt picked up a kill before NJIT scored the final two points to win 25-17, taking the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Soon and Stoudt both had three kills for the Tornado, while Davis and AJ Drooker each picking up two.
- Aiden Olson handed out six assists, with Andrew Haber finishing with four.
FOR THE FOES
- Alessandro Negri and Andrew Fedmasu both had nine kills for the Highlanders.
- Griffin Fieseler handed out 26 assists on the match.
UP NEXT
- The Tornado will face Penn State University Saturday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. from State College, Pa.
- NJIT will host Purdue Fort Wayne Saturday night.
