Tornado earn road win over Lions

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The King University men's volleyball team beat the Emmanuel Lions Thursday night, 3-1 in a Conference Carolinas matchup. Warren Davis and Kellan Kennedy both finished with 13 kills for the Tornado, while Jack Sarnowski handed out 40 set assists on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • The Tornado raced out to an early 4-0 lead, with Sarnowski recording a service ace.
  • Emmanuel would come back, tying the set at seven.
  • The teams would continue to battle throughout the set, with King taking a 24-23 lead, forcing a late Lions timeout.
  • After Emmanuel scored coming out of the timeout, King would score three of the final four points, including a set-ending kill from AJ Drooker that gave King a 27-25 win.
Second Set
  • The Tornado had early control of the set, scoring the first seven points, including back-to-back kills by Davis.
  • After the Lions got to within 14-10, the Tornado would score three of the next four points, including a kill by Kennedy, forcing Emmanuel to call timeout with King leading 17-11.
  • Emmanuel would score directly out of the timeout, but King went on an 8-2 run, spanning the remainder of the set to win 25-13, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Third Set
  • After the set started with both teams trading points, Emmanuel started to pull away after tying the set at seven, scoring the next five points to take a 12-7 advantage.
  • The Lions eventually stretched their lead to 20-14, which is where Davis picked up a kill to start a stretch of four consecutive King points, pulling to within 20-18.
  • Emmanuel would move to set point, up 24-20 when King scored three in a row, getting to 24-22 before the Lions took the set, 25-22.
Fourth Set
  • King was in control of the set early, scoring the first five points en route to an 8-1 lead that forced Emmanuel to call a timeout.
  • After the Lions got back to within 13-6, King extended their lead, eventually reached 19-9.
  • The Tornado would go to set point, up 24-12 after blocks from Davis and Haberthy, as well as Kennedy and Sarnowski.
  • Emmanuel would score a point, but the match ended on a kill from Kennedy, clinching a 25-13 set win, and a 3-1 match win for King.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • This is the fifth consecutive match that Davis has finished with double-digit kills, something that he has done a total of 18 times this season.
  • Kennedy ended up with 12, along with seven block assists and a pair of solo blocks.
  • Sean Haberthy had his best match of the season, recording a season-high five kills, with five block assists as well.
  • The Tornado had 16 total blocks as a team, their most of the season, and their most since March 27, 2021.
FOR THE FOES
  • Carlos Guerrero finished with 13 kills for Emmanuel, along with seven digs.
  • Nicklas Eichenberger had a team-high 10 digs.
  • Henrik Westhoff had 40 set assists for the Lions.
