Murphy scores late as King and SWU play to 1-1 draw

CENTRAL, S.C. – For the second time in a week, the King University men's soccer team found themselves in a tight contest on the road. The Tornado were able to even the score at Southern Wesleyan University late in the contest to force overtime. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in either extra session as the match ended in a draw.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Southern Wesleyan controlled play early taking three shots and earning a pair of corner kicks in the first 22 minutes before the Tornado turned the field.
  • For King, Eli Carrasco had the best scoring chance in the first half as he hit the crossbar in the 34th minute.
  • The match looked like it would go to halftime scoreless, but Sebastian Castro found the back of the net in the 45th minute to give the Warriors the lead.
  • The Tornado put pressure on Southern Wesleyan early in the second half, taking four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of the frame.
  • The pressure finally paid off in the 76th minute when Ryan Murphy took a free kick and drilled his shot into the back of the net to even the tally.
  • The Warriors then went on the offensive down the stretch, ripping eight shots over the final 10 minutes, including three in the 81st minute. King goalkeeper Kari Sveinsson came up with two saves in the 81st minute and the other Warrior shot hit the crossbar to keep the score tied.
  • In the first extra session, Southern Wesleyan took two shots to King's one, but none of the three shots were on target.
  • Southern Wesleyan ripped three shots in the second overtime, but failed to put any on target. On the other hand, King only took one shot in the final frame, but was on goal and turned away by the Warrior goalkeeper as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
  • Sveinsson posted two saves in goal, both coming in the second half to send the match to overtime.

FOR THE FOES

  • Castro's goal in the 45th minute was his third of the season with an assist going to Sam Rowden.
  • Goalkeeper Ruben Rodriguez made five saves in goal for the Warriors.
  • Southern Wesleyan out shot King 19-10, but the Tornado had a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For Murphy the goal marked his third tally of the season.
  • The double overtime match marked the first time since 2013 the Tornado have played a double overtime affair. That year King played two double overtime matches, both ended in a draw.
  • This marks the second time in as many years the match between King and Southern Wesleyan have gone to overtime. King earned a 2-1 victory in overtime in Bristol last year.
