Witt takes individual title with new school record

BOONE, N.C. – Hannah Witt set a new King University record on Friday at the Mountaineer Open, beating out a host of Division I runners to win the event overall.

Witt claimed her second individual title of 2013 after winning the Eye Opener Invitational to begin the season. Her time of 18:05.80 is the new fastest time in school history, besting Carrie Nelson's time of 18:17 in 2010.

"Hannah's individual win was very impressive. She's very deserving of the new King all-time record," said head coach Peter Dalton.

Evan Ferrell also continues to improve for the Tornado, running her fastest time of the season in Friday's meet. Her 19:59.52 time gave her a 36th-place overall finish in the event.

The Tornado finished fifth of nine teams. Virginia Tech won the event, followed by fellow Division I members UNC-Asheville, College of Charleston, and Appalachian State, which bested King by just six points. The Tornado finished ahead of Division I Elon and Wofford, Division II foe Lenoir-Rhyne University, and local NAIA rival Milligan College.

King's next event will be on Friday as they compete in the Royal Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
