Greeneville, Tenn. — King University men's volleyball put together one of its most competitive outings of the season on Friday evening, pushing Tusculum to the brink in a marathon opening set before ultimately falling 3–0 (29–27, 25–19, 25–21) inside Pioneer Arena. The Tornado (4–20) showed stretches of sharp offense, strong serving, and improved defensive cohesion against a Tusculum squad now 13–8 on the year.

Set One: A Near Steal on the Road

King opened the match with its most complete set of the night, trading points with Tusculum in a frame that featured 22 ties and six lead changes.

The Tornado offense clicked early, with Carson Pliapol and Brett Lloyd combining for seven kills in the opening frame. King held set point at 27–26 before Tusculum strung together the final three points to escape with a narrow 29–27 win.

The competitive first set set the tone for a night where King consistently challenged the Pioneers.

Offensive Highlights

Despite the sweep, King produced several standout individual performances:

Carson Pliapol – Team-High 11 Kills

Pliapol led the Tornado attack with 11 kills, adding two service aces and a block assist for a 13.5-point performance. His .217 hitting percentage was one of the most efficient marks on the floor.

Balanced Scoring Across the Lineup

Setter Joao Pedro Ribeiro steered the offense with 28 assists, while also contributing six digs and two block assists.

Defensive Effort Keeps King Close

King's block was a bright spot throughout the match, totaling 10 block assists and one solo block. Claiborne, Mathis, and Nye each contributed multiple blocks as the Tornado slowed Tusculum's attack at the net.

Defensively, King collected 25 digs, led by Ribeiro and Javier Saldivar, helping extend rallies and keep sets two and three within reach.

Sets Two and Three: Competitive Runs and Late Pushes

Tusculum gained momentum in the second set, but King responded with a strong hitting stretch midway through the frame, highlighted by kills from Pliapol and Lloyd. The Tornado hit .182 in the second set — their best efficiency of the night.

In the third, King again kept the pressure on, pulling within 20–19 before Tusculum closed the match with a late 5–2 run.

Bright Spots Moving Forward

Even in defeat, King showed:

  • One of its best blocking performances of the season
  • A strong opening set that nearly flipped the match's momentum
  • Continued offensive growth from Pliapol, Lloyd, and Claiborne
  • Steady setting and back-row defense from Ribeiro and Saldivar

King returns home on Saturday, April 4, for one of the most meaningful matches of the season — Senior Day inside the Student Center Complex. The Tornado will host Reinhardt University at 1 p.m. in Bristol, honoring the program's graduating student-athletes before first serve.
