Tornado qualify 15 for NCWWC national championships

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The #3 King University women's wrestling team crowned 8 champions Friday at the NCWWC Region II championships, with all 15 Tornado who entered the tournament qualifying for the NCWWC national championships in two weeks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • #6 Jessica Corredor took the title at 101 pounds, pinning Dusti Casperson from Southern Virginia before winning a 10-0 tech fall over Chiara Barbieri of Presbyterian before edging #8 Avery Kibelbek in the championship, 6-4 to earn her second regional title.
  • At 116 pounds, it was a King vs. King matchup as top-ranked Samara Chavez took the title with a first period pin over Melanie Mendoza. Chavez startedthe day with a tech fall win before pinning Mount Olive's Ayonna McNeil in the quarterfinals.
  • After taking her semifinal match 10-0, she pinned Mendoza in 1:01 for the title.
  • Mendoza won her first match via 40-second pin before winning a 10-0 tech fall in the semifinals over Emmanuel's Karissa Turnwall.
  • It was another all-King matchup at 123 pounds, as #4 Montana DeLawder earned a 5-0 win over Virginia Foard in the championship bout to take the regional title. DeLawder started her day with a pin of Evelyne Vazquez of Emmanuel before beating Alyssa Mahan of Presbyterian 12-2 to earn her place in the championship.
  • Foard won her first match over Jillian Timberlake in just 15 seconds before beating Emmanuel's Makayla Correa via 10-0 tech fall to clinch her spot in the title match.
  • Victoria Baez-Dilone also took home the title at 130 pounds, earning a 10-0 tech fall win over Ava Thomas from Emory & Henry before pinning Brielle Bibla in the semifinals. Her championship match resulted in a 5-0 win over Presbyterian's Cassia Zammit to win the title.
  • Claire DiCugno was also a champion, winning the title at 136 pounds. She wrestled twice on the day, winning both by matching 10-0 falls, with her championship win coming over Gianna Anaya of Emmanuel.
  • At 143 pounds, Aine Drury took home the title for the Tornado after beating Yasmine Kalilliy Oliveira in the title match. Drury started the day with two wins via pin and a 14-4 tech fall over Skie Roulo of Emory & Henry. After beating Maddie Kubicki of Presbyterian in the semifinals, she won 10-0 over Oliveira for the championship.
  • Oliveira was 2-1 on the day, with both wins coming via pin. She started with a second period pin of Huntingdon's Tristin Robinson before beating Skyelar Smith of Mount Olive in 2:22 in her semifinal match.
  • Chey Bowman won all four of her matches via pin en route to the championship at 155 pounds. After pinning Tayla Grove of Bluefield State in the first round in just 15 seconds, she pinned Makenzie Robinson of Emory & Henry in the quarterfinals.
  • She also won her semifinal match by first period pin before beating Mount Olive's Nia Miranda in 1:34 to win the title.
  • Alexa Garcia was the final champion for King, winning both of her matches via decision. She won her semifinal match 6-0 over Jada Arnold of Mount Olive before beating Ella Beam of Presbyterian 5-2 in the championship
  • At 109 pounds, #4 Danielle Garcia won her first two matches via tech fall, including a 10-0 win over Emmanuel's Haley Zinninger in the semifinals. Her lone loss came in the championship match, falling to Mount Olive's Samantha Miller.
  • Kibelbek was second at 101 pounds, winning her quarterfinal match via 2:28 pin of Djandra Tejada of Mount Olive. After winning her semifinal match via tech fall, she faced Corredor in the championship, dropping a 6-4 decision.
  • Guardiola finished third at 109 pounds, winning her first match vi pin before dropping her semifinal match. She then went 2-0 in the wrestleback rounds, including an 8-5 win over Shelby Fugate of Huntingdon in the third-place match.
  • At 130 pounds, A. Dicugno pinned Emmanuel's Jerelysa Funakoshi in 1:06 before falling in the semifinals. She would win her final two matches via pin, with her consolation semifinal resulting in a 1:11 pin before beating Brielle Bibla of Mount Olive in 1:38 in the third-place match.
