BRISTOL, Tenn. – Following the winter season, Conference Carolinas announced their Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Hudl.
Jan Kuljak was selected for men's swimming and
Katy Neubert was selected for women's indoor track & field.
Kuljak becomes the first men's swimmer to be named Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The junior earned All-Conference Carolinas in five different events this season, earning second team distinction in the 800 yard freestyle relay. He garnered third team all-conference in the 500 yard freestyle and three different relays, 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle. He posted an NCAA B cut and set a school record with a time of 1:39.67 in the 200 yard freestyle. In the classroom, Kuljak carries a 3.43 GPA while majoring in biology and mathematics.
Neubert becomes the third women's track & field athlete to garner Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining
Maegan Henry in 2014 and Hannah Witt in 2013. Last season Neubert was the Conference Carolinas Elite 23 Award recipient during the outdoor track & field season and she earned the same award in cross country last fall. The junior carries a 4.00 GPA while majoring in cell and molecular biology. At the conference championships in February she helped the distance medley relay win the conference championship and she finished runner-up in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:24.05.
The Scholar-Athlete awards are presented annually to one individual in each Conference Carolinas sponsored sport. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners are chosen by the Conference Carolinas Student-Athlete Affairs Committee.
To be considered, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher. In addition, the nominees for the award must have been named all-conference in their sport and also chosen academic all-conference.
