King comes from behind to claim Conference Carolinas title

SNOW HILL, N.C. – The King University men's golf team came from behind to win the Conference Carolinas championship on Wednesday. The Tornado were in fifth place and trailed by nine strokes entering the day, but King shot five-under 283 on the final day to finish first with a tournament total of 887.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • King shot 309 on the opening day, landing them in sixth place.
  • The Tornado then moved one spot up the leaderboard with a second round of 295.
  • Everything came together for the Tornado as they finished with a round of 283 as all five individuals shot 74 or lower with three under par and one at par in the final round.
  • Alex Bradford closed with a round of three-under 69. He finished sixth with a tournament total of 221 after shooting 80 in the opening round and 72 in the second round.
  • Jeffery Perez also finished sixth with a tournament total of 221.
  • Perez opened with a round of 76 before shooting one-under 71 in the second round. He closed with a round of 74.
  • Åasmund Norum finished with a stroke total of 222, giving him a ninth-place finish.
  • He improved each round after starting with a round of 77. He closed with rounds of 73 and even par 72.
  • Jose Luis Garcia Jimenez closed with a round of 71. He shot 79 in each of the first two rounds to finish with a total of 229.
  • Samuel Trueba shot 77 in the opening round and didn't compete in Monday's second round.
  • He came back and closed with a round of one-under 71.
FOR THE FOES
  • Barton College finished runner-up with a score of 890 while the University of Mount Olive came in third at 892.
  • Mount Olive's Brice Ballin was the individual medalist by three strokes, shooting five-under 211.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The conference win marks the first Conference Carolinas crown for the Tornado since joining the league in 2011-12.
  • Their previous best finish was second in 2014-15.
  • Bradford, Perez and Norum were all selected to the all-tournament team.
  • King earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Southeast Regional, marking the first time the Tornado will play in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Richard Powell qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional as an individual in 2012-13.
  • The sixth-place finish for Bradford is his best finish at the Conference Carolinas Championship and second top 10 as he finished ninth last season.
