King completes reverse sweep of Emmanuel

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The King University men's volleyball team lost the first two sets to Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon, but came roaring back to win the final three sets and complete a reverse sweep. Joshua Kim led the way, recording 14 kills. Jackson Carroll had five blocks, while Kellan Kennedy added four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • King took an early 2-1 lead before the Lions scored five straight points to take a 6-3 lead.
  • After a Kennedy kill, Emmanuel scored three straight to extend the lead to 9-3.
  • King promptly scored three of their own, getting to within 9-6.
  • King and Emmanuel would trade points until the Tornado tied the set at 19 when Jack Sarnowski delivered a service ace before taking the lead on an attack error, 20-19.
  • Emmanuel would close the set on a 6-3 run to win 25-23.
Second Set
  • Neither team was able to gain a very large advantage in the second set, with the biggest lead coming at 16-10 in favor of Emmanuel.
  • King promptly scored four straight points, including a service ace from Carroll to cut the lead to 16-14.
  • King got to within 22-19 on a Kim kill before benefiting from an Emmanuel attack error to make it a 22-20 score.
  • After trading points, the Tornado scored two straight, with Sarnowski recording another kill, but the Lions closed the set with a kill to win 25-23.
Third Set
  • Emmanuel scored the first three points of the set before King scored four straight, with Kim recording a kill off an assist from JT Deppe.
  • A short time later the Tornado would score three straight, all on Emmanuel attack errors to stretch the lead to 8-5.
  • After Emmanuel got a kill, the Tornado opened up a large lead thanks to a 6-0 run to make the score 14-6.
  • The teams continued to trade points, with Emmanuel getting to within 24-17 before a service error gave King the 25-17 win.
Fourth Set
  • King was leading the set 4-3 when Deppe recorded a thunderous kill to kick off what would end up being a streak of seven unanswered points, making the score 11-3 in favor of the Tornado.
  • The Lions scored a couple of points before Carroll hit back-to-back service aces to take a 15-6 lead.
  • After a brief stretch of exchanging points, Kennedy and Kim teamed up for back-to-back kills to give King an 18-8 lead.
  • Both teams would score seven points over the remainder of the set, with King winning 25-15.
Fifth Set
  • The Lions had the upper hand early, scoring the first two points before Kim recorded another kill to get King on the board.
  • Emmanuel would record a kill of their own before King went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead.
  • The Tornado would score three straight points to take a 9-4 lead.
  • The teams went back-and-forth until the Lions scored three straight points to get to within 12-10.
  • The Tornado led 14-12 when Deppe delivered a massive kill to give King the set (15-12) and the match (3-2).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kim led the Tornado attack, racking up 14 kills and an attack percentage of .346.
  • Aaron Milstead had eight block assists to lead the Tornado in that category.
  • Deppe and Kim both had seven digs, while Sarnowski had six.
  • As a team, the Tornado finished with 14.5 blocks, just missing out on tying their season-high of 15, which was set against Limestone on Feb. 4.
FOR THE FOES
  • Three Lions finished with double-digit kills, led by Eli Zdonek, who had 17. Carlos Guerrero had 14 kills while Gustavo Cavalcanti had 13 for Emmanuel.
UP NEXT
  • King will be back inside the Student Center Tuesday night when they host North Greenville at 7 p.m.
  • Emmanuel is back on the road Tuesday, facing Erskine before a trio of nonconference matches.
