BRISTOL, Tenn. – Following her performance at the NWCA National Duals, helping the King University women's wrestling team to a national title,
Montana DeLawder was selected USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.
The freshmen went 3-0 at the NWCA National Duals, taking two wins over ranked opponents. She opened with two pins, first over Solana Mattola of Tiffin University in 47 seconds. DeLawder, ranked third at 130 pounds, then pinned Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central College in 4:10 in the semifinal dual. Nguyen-Smith was ranked third at 123 pounds.
In the championship bout, DeLawder squared off with top-ranked Cameron Guerin of McKendree University. DeLawder earned the 7-4 victory to help the Tornado win the championship dual 25-19.
DeLawder is the second Tornado to be recognized as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week this season.
Sage Mortimer was recognized on December 16 after she won the North Central Open with a pair of wins over ranked opponents.
