Sprayberry sets season kills mark, King falls to Coker

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team jumped out of Conference Carolinas play to take on Coker College on Saturday afternoon in the Student Center Complex. Coker took the first two sets, but the Tornado came storming back to take the next two sets, forcing a fifth set. However, the Cobras took the set 15-12 for the 3-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cobras scored five of the first seven points to gain the advantage in the first set, eventually stretching their lead to five points.
  • King came back and evened the score at 15-15 on an Adrian Besson kill, and the score was again tied at 16 following a Jon Wheaton kill.
  • However, Coker scored six straight points to take a 22-16 lead on their way to the 25-22 win.
  • In the second set, King used a 4-0 run to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 14-12 advantage. Wheaton and Sprayberry teamed up for a block that evened the tally on the run.
  • Coker came back and scored eight of the next 11 points, taking a 20-17 lead on their way to the 25-20 victory.
  • In the third set, Coker broke an 8-8 tie with a 4-0 run, and the Cobras let 18-14 before the Tornado came back to even the tally at 20-20.
  • King scored four straight points to take a 22-20 lead following a Sprayberry ace. Sprayberry then gave King the 25-21 victory with a kill.
  • A kill from Sean Luhmann, followed by three aces from Nick Drooker gave King a 9-5 lead in the fourth set. King scored two more points, including another Drooker ace to take an 11-5 lead in the fourth set.
  • Coker came back to get within one on a few occasions, but King had an answer each time as the Tornado went on to take the set 25-20 and force a fifth frame.
  • The Cobras jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and led 10-4 before the Tornado started to come back.
  • King scored four straight points on three kills from Sprayberry and another on a kill from Luhmann. The Tornado eventually evened the tally at 11-11.
  • However, Coker scored three straight points to have a chance at match point and force a King timeout.
  • King scored a point after the break, but the Cobras took the set 15-12 for the 3-2 victory.
  • Sprayberry led King with 25 kills and hit a blistering .429 with only four errors.
  • Lumann followed with 10 kills and Besson added six.
  • Drooker posted a double-double with team-highs of 41 assists and 10 digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Joao Victor Santos led Coker with 23 kills and 14 digs for the double-double.
  • Artur Cabral followed with 19 kills and Luke Hanson added 13.
  • Aleksa Bijelic handed out 57 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Sprayberry became King's all-time leader for kills in a season, passing Ariel Apolinario who posted 348 kills in 2009. With 25 on the day, Sprayberry now has 361 kills on the season to lead the Tornado.
  • The double-double for Drooker marks his seventh of the season.

  • King hosts Erskine College on Tuesday night in the Student Center Complex. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • Coker travels to Emmanuel College on Wednesday.
