Block helps Tornado top Limestone

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team got a much needed win on Tuesday evening when the defeated Limestone College in Conference Carolinas tilt. The Tornado took two sets that went to extra points, including the fourth set after scoring the final three points to take the 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jeff Sprayberry and Nick Drooker got King off to a hot start with a kills and service ace before Adrian Besson added a kill to make it a 4-0 lead.
  • A block from Matthew Lychock and Sean Luhmann forced a Limestone timeout as King took an 8-1 lead.
  • The Saints, however, came back and took a 20-18 lead following a 3-0 run.
  • Besson then gave the lead back to the Tornado and Drooker followed with an ace. Lychock and Luhmann made it a 5-0 lead that gave King a 23-20 advantage and forced Limestone timeout.
  • Consecutive kills from Lychock and Luhmann gave King the 25-22 first set victory.
  • The second set was tight the entire way, but the Tornado looked to gain separation with a 3-0 run, taking a 14-11 lead following a Jon Wheaton kill.
  • King later led 20-17 before the Saints came back to even the tally at 22, and the teams began to trade points.
  • King had the upper hand throughout and following a Besson kill, Lychock and Sprayberry teamed up for a block that gave King the 28-26 victory.
  • Limestone gained separation with a 3-0 run to take a 15-12 lead.
  • The Saint advantage grew to 21-16 as they took the set 25-20.
  • It was King that had the advantage early in the fourth set, opening up an 8-3 lead.
  • However, Limestone worked their way back and took a 14-12 lead following a 3-0 run.
  • After a Wheaton kill pulled King within 17-16, the Saints scored three straight points to take a 20-16 lead.
  • However, the Tornado came back and eventually evened the score at 22.
  • The teams then traded points with Limestone having the upper hand until King went on a run.
  • King scored the final three points of the match, the final on a block from Drooker, giving King the 28-26 victory to take the match 3-1.
  • Sprayberry led King with 13 kills and 11 digs for the double-double.
  • Drooker also posted a double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs.
  • Wheaton added 12 kills and hit .348 while Luhmann chipped in with 10 kills.
  • Lychock posted a team-high seven blocks, including two solo stuffs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Bruno Kretzschmar and Dylan Lavner led the Saints with 16 kills each. Lavner also hit .538 in the match.
  • Joel Muhlbach chipped in with 11 kills, hitting .688 with zero attack errors.
  • Logan Riley handed out 53 assists and accounted for 11 digs for the double-double.
  • Nick Wildes led Limestone with 12 digs and Anthony Savage added 10 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • King posted 13.5 blocks in the contest, their highest total of the season and the eighth time they reached at least 10 blocks in a match.
  • The double-double for Sprayberry marks his foruth of the season and for Drooker it was his fifth of the year.

  • King travels to take on Pfeiffer University on Thursday. First serve from Misenheimer, N.C. is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • The Saints take on Erskine College on Friday.
