Offense leads King past Alderson Broaddus

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Playing their first match of the week due to weather, the King University men's volleyball team came out with an impressive offensive performance on Friday night. The Tornado hit .315 in the match and got a double-double from Jeff Sprayberry as they defeated Alderson Broaddus University 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King used a 7-0 run in the first set to turn a 15-14 deficit into a 21-15 lead and force Alderson Broaddus to use both of their timeouts.
  • Sprayberry gave King a chance at set point with a kill as the Tornado took the opening set 25-20.
  • Behind the service of Nick Drooker, the Tornado rolled off the first five points of the second set and opened up a 9-2 lead following a block from Jon Wheaton and Sean Luhmann.
  • Wheaton and Andrian Besson followed with another block, stretching the King lead to 10-2.
  • The Battlers came back to get within 22-21 down the stretch, but Sprayberr registered a kill and Matthew Lychock and Besson gave King the 25-21 victory with a block.
  • Back-to-back kills from Lychock and Luhmann turned a 10-9 King deficit into a lead the Tornado wouldn't relinquish. In all, King went on a 6-1 run to take control of the set.
  • A Lychock kill gave King a chance at match point and Wheaton gave the Tornado the sweep with a kill as King took the final set 25-20.
  • Sprayberry posted a double-double as he accounted for 10 kills and 12 digs.
  • Luhmann also tallied 10 kills while Wheaton chipped in with seven.
  • Drooker handed out 31 assists to go along with five digs while Lychock posted six blocks.

FOR THE FOES

  • Obenda Besongngem led Alderson Broaddus with 20 kills to go along with eight digs.
  • Benjamin Bravo handed out 35 assists and Erik Arroyo added eight digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The double-double for Sprayberry was the first of his career, and the 12 digs set a new career-best.

UP NEXT

  • King hosts Pfeiffer University on Tuesday night. First serve from the Student Center Complex is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • Alderson Broaddus hosts Barton College on Saturday.
