Tornado sweep Charleston in season-opening win

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team took the court for the first time in the 2014-15 season looking for a season-opening win for the first time in program history. The University of Charleston came to town for their first ever match but the near double-double from Eddie Moushikhian helped give King the 3-0 win over the Golden Eagles.

The game began with King (1-0) getting the first point coming from a Stephen Brown kill off an assist from Nick Drooker. The Tornado took a 9-3 lead of kills from Moushikhian and Nick Serowski to force a Charleston timeout. The Golden Eagles scored the next three points, cutting the lead in half before King got a point on a service error. The lead opened to 18-13 on a service ace from Stephen Brown. The Tornado matched their largest lead of the game at six when Drooker delivered Matthew Lychock the ball, resulting in a kill, giving King a 22-16 lead. The final point of the game came when Brown registered a kill giving King a 25-17 win in the season-opening set.

The second set went the exact same way for King. The scoring went back and forth till Brown capped a 3-0 run off with a kill making the score 6-2. Moushikhian gave King a 13-8 lead when he took a pass from Drooker and nailed the ball down for the kill. The Golden Eagles narrowed the King lead to 18-16 but King was quick to open the lead back to 20-16 off a service error and an attack error. The game ended with a Charleston attack error, giving the Tornado a 25-18 win.

King was quick to score the first two points in the third and final set. Moushikhian brought the lead to 7-4 off an assist from Drooker but Charleston (0-1) would not go away as they quickly tied the game up at seven. The Tornado would score the next three points capped off by a kill from Mason Casner. The game was all tied up at 14 before Moushikhian came through again with another kill giving King the one point advantage. It would go back and forth from there and Moushikhian tied it up yet again, this time at 24 apiece. Charleston would obtain a point but King was awarded the tying point off a service error and gained the lead on a Golden Eagles attack error, 26-25. The final and match-winning point came off a Moushikhian kill, assisted by Brown to give King the 3-0 win over Charleston.

The Tornado were led by Moushikhian who recorded 11 kills at a percentage of.375, followed by Brown with nine. Drooker registered 24 assists and Moushikhian led the team in digs with nine. As a team, King had an attack percentage of .276 whereas the Golden eagles posted a .078 percentage. The Tornado had 14 attack errors to Charleston's 21.

King will have a quick turnaround when they will host Quincy University tomorrow night at 8:00 pm in the Student Center.
