Pembroke, N.C. – King University's men's wrestling team made a strong statement at the PJ Smith Pembroke Open, with three Tornado grapplers earning top-two finishes and combining for eight total wins across their respective brackets.
David Bertrand Dominates at 197 Pounds
David Bertrand led the way for King with a flawless performance in the 197-pound division. Competing in the College - Other category, Bertrand went 3-0 on the day to claim first place. His championship bout, match #267, saw him take control early and never look back, defeating UNC Pembroke's Quintez Shipman by major decision, 10-2, on Mat 1. Bertrand's aggressive style and mat control were on full display throughout the tournament.
Hendricks and Morrisette Take Second
Redshirt sophomore
Ashtan Hendricks battled his way to a runner-up finish at 141 pounds. He collected three wins en route to the finals, showcasing speed and technical precision in each match. Hendricks continues to build momentum as a key competitor in King's lightweight lineup.
Clint Morrisette also reached the finals in the 174-pound bracket, earning second place with two strong victories. Wrestling in the College - Other division, Morrisette demonstrated grit and mat awareness, adding valuable experience to his season resume.
