Greenwood, S.C. The King University Men's Wrestling team went to the NCAA Super Regional tournament at Lander University and earned second place as a team, the highest in school history. King had a champion at 149 pounds with
Brennan Watkins and three second-place finishers, as well as five other podium place finishers.
Watkins earned first place at 149 pounds with an impressive path to first place trophy. He won his first back in a quick 2:25 tech fall, 15-0 in round one. He moved to round two even stronger with a pin in 5:00 to send himself to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Watkins went into three overtimes to claim victory by riding time 2-1. In the finals, he won in a clean 7-2 decision victory with an impressive three-period scoring four of his three points.
Clint Morrisette at 174 pounds earned second place with a Tech fall in the first match in 4:25, 21-5. He then went into the second round, winning by a major decision, 17-7. Heading into the semi-finals, he won again by major decision 12-2, sending him to the finals. Morrisette fell in the finals 4-2.
David Bertrand earned second place at 197 pounds. In the first round, Bertrand won by tech fall in just 6:27. He moved to the next round, winning by decision 8-2. In the semi-finals, he won in a sudden decision victory 4-1.
Nate Coley also earned second place at 285 pounds. With a first-round bye, in the second round, he was able to win by decision 8-1, sending him to the semi-finals. He was able to get a win by decision 1-0 with an escape in the second period.
