BRISTOL, Tenn. –
Ashtan Hendricks of the King University men's wrestling team and
Samara Chavez of the King University women's wrestling team have been named the Conference Carolinas wrestlers of the week after their performances at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals.
Hendricks, a sophomore from Jamestown, Ohio, went 4-1 last week, a win over no. 6 Alyeus Craig of St. Cloud State in the first match of the National Duals. He also had a pin of Tiffin's Christopher Oleksiak in under one minute. His lone loss came to top-ranked Cayden Henschel of Wisconsin-Parkside.
This is the second time in his King career that Hendricks has been named conference men's wrestler of the week, and the first time this season. It is also the first time this season that the Tornado men have had a conference wrestler of the week.
Chavez, currently ranked no. 3 in the country, went 2-0 at the National Duals, with both wins coming over ranked opponents. Against no. 7 Sophia Cornish of Colorado Mesa, Chavez won via a 51-second pin, while she beat no. 4 Kendra Ryan of North Central 6-0.
This is the first time this season that Chavez has been named conference women's wrestler of the week, and the second time this season that King has earned the award.
