Tornado downed by Crusaders

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's basketball team held a lead after the first quarter, but ultimately fell to North Greenville University, 74-56 Saturday afternoon inside the Student Center Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
  • North Greenville took a 12-4 lead halfway through the quarter.
  • King scored the next 13 points, with Jhayda McKinney, Le'Aije Ellington and Ashley Phillip hitting threes to help King to a 20-12 lead.
  • The Crusaders closed to within 20-16 with 18 seconds to play, but Raven Addison hit a buzzer beating three from near half court to put King in front 23-16.
Second Period
  • North Greenville scored the first nine points before Ellington hit a jumper to tie the score at 25.
  • King pulled to within 29-28 after Alexa Gramann hit a free throw, but the Crusaders ended the quarter on a 12-5 scoring run to pull ahead 41-33 entering halftime, with Alayna Smith and Phillip hitting jumpers for the Tornado.
Third Period
  • The Crusaders scored the first five points of the half before Phillip hit a jumper to trim the lead to 46-35.
  • The Crusaders lead reached 51-35 before Smith and Morgan Bone hit consecutive layups to make it a 12 point lead.
  • King would score 12 of the final 17 points, pulling to within 60-46 entering the final quarter.
Fourth Period
  • Gramann hit a jumper, followed by Jaelyn West hitting a three, bringing the Tornado to within 635-51 with just over six minutes left.
  • Addison forced a turnover with 3:56 left, taking it down the court and hitting the ensuing jumper to make the score 69-54.
  • Dunbar hit a pair of free throws with 2:02 left, but the Crusaders scored the final three points to take a 74-56 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Phillip scored 10 points to lead the Tornado, with Dunbar adding nine.
  • Smith grabbed 12 rebounds, while West adding nine on seven points.
FOR THE FOES
  • Greyson Boone led all scorers with 19 points, followed by 16 from Amaijah Smith and 15 from Abi Oates.
  • Oates, Tabitha Littlefield and Angie Rodriguez all had six rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • King will be off until Feb. 10 when they play at Chowan University.
  • The Crusaders will play Southern Wesleyan University Wednesday evening.
