Jhayda McKinney,
Morgan Bone and
Jaelyn West all scored in double figures Saturday for the King University women's basketball team, but they were unable to pick up a road win, falling 87-64 to Chowan University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
- After Brianna Dunbar hit a free throw, McKinney drilled a three with 6:20 left to play to make the score 6-4 in favor of Chowan.
- The Hawks would go on a 19-0 scoring run that spanned the remainder of the quarter, taking a 25-4 lead into the break.
Second Period
- Ashley Phillip hit a driving layup in the opening minute, after which Chowan scored six straight to make the score 31-6.
- A layup by Kiley Beach was followed a short time later by Alayna Smith hitting a pair of free throws, bringing King to within 31-10.
- Bone hit a driving layup with 3:04 left, followed by Bone taking a pass from Dunbar and drilling a three, making the score 40-19.
- Bone then hit a layup with 56 seconds to play, but the Hawks hit a bucket as well to take a 45-21 lead into the intermission.
Third Period
- King scored the first seven points of the quarter, with Dunbar picking up five of them, including a triple with 9:03 left.
- West then scored five straight, pulling the Tornado to within 56-37 with 4:51 left in the quarter.
- The Hawks would close the half on a 16-9 run, with West accounting for six of those points and Le'Aije Ellington hitting a step back jumper in the closing seconds, closing the lead to 72-47.
Fourth Period
- Chowan continued to work their lead, taking an 81-55 advantage before an 8-2 King scoring run where McKinney scored five points to pull the Tornado within 83-63 with 4:09 left.
- The Tornado would go scoreless from the field in the remainder of the game, with a Bone free throw making the final score 87-64 in favor of the Hawks.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- McKinney had 14 points to lead the Tornado, with Bone adding 12 and West scoring 10.
- Smith had nine rebounds, and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line for the Tornado.
FOR THE FOES
- Tynasia Bunting led all scorers, posting 23 points while Daneesha Briggs had 15 and Meara Carter scoring 10.
- Carter also led the Hawks with eight rebounds, with Bunting pulling five.
UP NEXT
- The Tornado will return home for a pair of games next week, starting Tuesday when they host Converse University at 5:30 p.m.
- Chowan will host the University of Mount Olive Wednesday night.
