WISE, Va. – The King University women's basketball team lost momentum in the second half against UVA Wise, falling 84-69 on the road on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- After the Highland Cavaliers scored the first basket, King had three players score over the course of the next three and a half minutes to put the Tornado up 7-2.
- Jaden Potts pushed the lead to six before the media timeout with a three-point jumper.
- Alayna Smith's fast break off a turnover fell in the rim just as time expired for the opening quarter to give King a 16-9 lead.
Second Quarter
- The Tornado would continue the momentum into the second quarter with a 6-2 run within the first minute and a half, expanding the lead into double-digits at 22-11.
- While King maintained the lead, UVA Wise began to gain momentum and by the 3:44 mark, it was a one possession game.
- Two free throws from Kendall Cross closed out the first half and sent King to the locker room down by one.
Third Quarter
- King would trail all of the second half but had a few comeback attempts.
- Both teams scored 20 points in the third quarter, as UVA Wise maintained their one point advantage headed into the final frame.
- 15 of the Tornado's points came from Mariya Williams (7), Sarah Thompson (5), and Le'Aije Ellington (3). All three combined to go 10-11 from the charity stripe in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- UVA Wise had a massive momentum shift in the quarter, outscoring King 32-18. Alexa Gramann had 7 of the Tornado's points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Mariya Williams led the team with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. She went a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line.
- Alexa Gramann and Le'Aije Ellington contributed 10 points each. Sarah Thompson had a team-high 4 assists.
- As a team, the Tornada shot 25-29 from the charity stripe, with Williams, Gramann, Thompson, and Cross all being perfect. The team also slightly outscored the Highland Cavaliers 15-14 on points from turnovers and 17-6 on second chance points. King also had 35 rebounds compared to 33 for the home team.
FOR THE FOES
- Ella Karst had 27 points off the bench to lead UVA Wise – 11 came in the strong 4th quarter. Sable Burnside was the only other Highland Cavalier in double-digit scoring with 12.
- Katlin Burger had 6 rebounds, five of which were on the defensive end of the court. Allyson Fleenor had a game-high six assists.
