King drops a pair at Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The King University softball team dropped a pair of Conference Carolinas contests at Barton College on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs took game one 12-4 before hitting a three-run home run in the seventh inning of game two take the 4-2 victory.

KING HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Barton took a 1-0 lead following a one-out infield single, stolen base and a two-out double in the first inning.
  • King came back and loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but Bulldog pitcher Miranda Holmes got three straight strikeouts to end the inning.
  • Sloane Correa then started the bottom of the second inning with a home run to right field, extending the Barton lead to 2-0.
  • The Bulldogs then loaded the bases with one out before the Tornado got the second out and looked like might get out of the inning.
  • However, a wild pitch scored one run before a two-run single and another run-scoring single gave Barton a 6-0 lead going to the third.
  • Carly Turner started the fourth inning with a double and later scored on a Logan Leonard sacrifice fly, pulling King within 6-1.
  • Barton added a pair in the fourth, extending their lead to 8-1.
  • Camryn Haag started the fifth with a double before Campbell reached on an error.
  • Lawson then laced a home run, pulling King within 8-4.
  • However, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out and scored one run on a walk and another on a groundout.
  • Gracelyn Massey followed with a double to left center that plated a pair and gave Barton the 12-4 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Turner reached on an error to start the second inning and later scored on a Foster single to give King a 1-0 lead.
  • A pair of Barton singles, followed by an error got the Bulldogs on the board in the third.
  • Barton then put runners on the corners, but Madison Walter got a pair of groundouts to end the inning and keep the game even at 1-1.
  • With two outs in the fourth, Thompson laced a home run to left center, giving King a 2-1 lead.
  • Following a Barton one-out single in the fourth, Walter retired five straight before Barton leadoff single in the sixth.
  • The runner was cut down trying to reach third following a defensive miscue.
  • Barton then posted a two-out double, but Walter left her there to give King a 2-1 lead going to the seventh.
  • Barton started the seventh with a double and a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run on third base.
  • MacKenzie Taylor then worked a walk and stole second before Makenzie Cyzick ripped a home run to left field, giving Barton the 4-2 win.

  • Emily Bell, Lindsey Massengill and Massey all drove in three runs in game one while Correa drove in two.
  • Savanna Branch, Bell, Massey and Correa all registered two hits in game one.
  • Cyzick and Correa posted two hits in game two, with Cyzick driving in three.
