Mortimer named NWCA Region 2 Wrestler of the Month

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Sage Mortimer of the King University women's wrestling team has been named the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) women's wrestler of the month for Region 2. This is her first regional honor of the season, and the second time in her career she has received regional wrestler of the month honors.

Mortimer, who is ranked no. 1 in the country at 109 pounds, won a pair of tournaments in December, including the North Central Open where she picked up a pair of wins over ranked opponents. After beating fifth-ranked Kendra Ryan of North Central 14-4 in the semifinals, she took the championship with an 8-2 decision over top-ranked Sydney Petzinger of North Central.

She also competed at the Wasps Open, where she went 5-0 en route to the championship, including a win via pin over teammate and third-ranked Dianna Holmes. Overall, she was 9-0 on the month, with two wins via pin and six coming by tech fall.

Mortimer and the rest of the Tornado will be back on the mat this weekend for the NWCA National Duals. King, who enters the tournament as the no. 1 team in the nation and are the defending champions, opens the tournament Friday at 10 a.m. against Schreiner.
