Tornado open home slate with win over Wasps

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Playing their first home match of the season, the King University women's volleyball team picked up a straight sets win over regional rival Emory & Henry College Tuesday night behind a double-double from Hailee Blankenship, who finished with 14 kills and 13 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • After the Wasps took a 5-4 lead, Abigale Jayne picked up a kill to tie the set at five, kicking off a 4-0 Tornado run that saw them take an 8-5 lead.
  • Emory & Henry would take another one-point lead at 15-14, leading to back-to-back kills from Julie Danner and Blankenship, making the score 16-15.
  • King started to put some distance between themselves and the Wasps late, as Jayne picked up a kill to put King up 19-18, sparking what would end up being a 6-0 run that put the Tornado on the verge of set point.
  • Emory & Henry would get to 24-19, but an attack error handed King the set win, 25-19.
Second Set
  • Emory & Henry jumped out to a 3-0 lead, eventually extending it to 7-2.
  • Abigail Belcher and Kara Miller then recorded back-to-back kills to make the score 7-4.
  • After two attack errors from the Wasps tied the score at 9, Miller picked up another kill to give King a 10-9 lead.
  • The Wasps held tough, getting to within 19-18 before Jayne picked up a kill to make the score 20-18, which set up Gabri Puertas for a service ace and Miller for yet another kill, making it a 22-18 advantage.
  • King scored the final two points of the set, including a kill from Danner, taking the set 25-20.
Third Set
  • Set three started off just like the second set, with the Wasps taking an early 3-0 lead before a Danner kill got King on the board.
  • Blankenship recorded a kill to make the score 4-2, setting off a 4-0 King run that would see them take a 5-4 lead off back-to-back kills from Blankenship.
  • Emory & Henry re-took the lead, extending it to 14-11 before King scored four in a row, with Blankenship picking up a pair of kills and Jayne adding one to make it a 15-14 set.
  • After the Wasps recorded a kill to make the score 18-17, King scored three points in a row to extend the lead to 21-17, eventually taking a 24-18 lead.
  • Emory & Henry scored a pair of points to get to within 24-20, which is where Jayne closed the match with her eighth kill of the night, handing King a 25-20 set win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Blankenship set a pair of season-highs, with her 14 kills and 13 digs. She has finished in double digits for digs in two of the three matches she has played this season.
  • Katie Harless handed out 35 assists, going along with seven digs.
  • Danner posted 10 kills, while Jayne had eight and Miller finished with six.
FOR THE FOES
  • Brianna Hogan also had a double-double, finishing with 11 kills and 10 digs.
  • Libby Bickelhaupt had 12 digs, while Payton Rolfsen finished with 17 assists.
Up Next
  • King is on the road this weekend, competing at the Mars Hill Tournament. They will start by facing Georgia College Friday morning before taking on hosts Mars Hill University at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Wasps turn their eyes to their first-ever South Atlantic Conference match, as they will host Limestone University Friday at 5 p.m.
