Top-ranked Tornado win the North Central Open behind 19 placers

NAPERVILLE; Ill. – The top-ranked King University women's wrestling team won their second tournament of the season on Saturday, winning the North Central Open. The Tornado had 19 individuals place, including six take home first place finishes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At 101 pounds, fourth-ranked Jaclyn McNichols won both of her matches to take first. She defeated Odelia Lopez of Schreiner University on a 10-0 technical fall before winning the championship bout due to an injury.
  • Deja Heatley finished fourth at 101 pounds, gong 2-2. She defeated a pair of opponents from host North Central College, including an 11-0 technical fall over Amber Turner in the consolation semifinal.
  • Both seventh-ranked Danielle Garcia and Dianna Holmes placed at 109 pounds with Garcia taking fourth and Holmes finishing sixth.
  • Garcia went 4-2 with a pair of narrow defeats to third-ranked Natalie Reyna of McKendree University, falling on criteria in the third-place bout. She earned two wins by fall and another by technical fall.
  • Holmes went 3-2, falling to Garcia and top-ranked Emily Shilson of Augsburg College. Holmes' first two wins came by technical fall and fall.
  • Sage Mortimer won her second tournament of the season as the fourth-ranked wrestler went 3-0 at 116 pounds. Her final two wins came by technical fall over ranked opponents. She topped sixth-ranked Aliyah Rollins of McKendree 17-5 before defeating fifth-ranked Kendra Ryan of North Central 12-2.
  • Also at 116 pounds, Samara Chavez finished third, going 4-1. Her final two wins came over ranked opponents by fall, pinning seventh-ranked Mateah Roehl of North Central in 1:44 and sixth-ranked Rollins in 55 seconds to take third.
  • The Tornado had three placers at 123 pounds, led by the champion and third-ranked Cheyenne Sisenstein who went 3-0.
  • She started with a pin before back-to-back technical fall victories, the final one over fourth-ranked Asia Nguyen-Smith of North Central.
  • Melanie Mendoza finished fifth while Vayle-Rae Baker took sixth following an injury.
  • Mendoza went 4-2 and fought back following and opening 4-2 defeat to sixth-ranked Amani Jones of North Central.
  • The trio of Montana DeLawder, Phoenix Dubose and Sophia Mirabella all placed at 130 pounds.
  • Fourth-ranked DeLawder defeated second-ranked Dubose in the title bout 10-6 following a 2:43 pin over sixth-ranked Niya Gaines of North Central in the semifinal.
  • Dubose went 3-1 on the day to take second.
  • Mirabella finished sixth after winning her first two bouts of the day.
  • At 136 pounds, top-ranked Ana Luciano finished first, going 4-0 and taking a pair of ranked wins.
  • She started with a 1:21 pin of eighth-ranked Nina Kemu Makem of Augsburg and finished with an 8-5 decision over fourth-ranked Skye Realin of McKendree.
  • At 143 pounds, top-ranked Ashlynn Ortega finished second and sixth-ranked London Houston finished third.
  • Following and opening technical fall, Ortega pinned seventh-ranked Riley Aamold in 1:12 to reach the final.
  • Houston pinned fourth-ranked Kim Nunez of North Central to reach the third-place bout where she took her second 10-0 technical fall victory of the day over Kelly Escamille of Lindenwood University.
  • Tiffany Baublitz and fifth-ranked Viktorya Torres both placed at 155 pounds, taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
  • Baublitz opened with a pair of pins, including a 1:52 pin of fourth-ranked Marlynne Deede of Augsburg. She also earned a 7-1 victory over Torres in the consolation semifinal following a defeat to second-ranked Kayla Marano of McKendree.
  • Torres went 3-2 as she fought back after an opening defeat. She earned two wins by pin on the day.
  • Fourth-ranked Chey Bowman finished first at 170 pounds with three victories, including two by technical fall.
  • In the final, she defeated third-ranked Joye Levendusky of McKendree 3-2.
  • At 191 pounds, Nia Crosdale finished fifth, going 4-2. She earned one win by pin and two by technical fall.
