Pitching leads King to sweep of Converse

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team came away with a Conference Carolinas sweep of Converse College on Tuesday afternoon. The Tornado took game one 8-0 in five innings before winning game two 8-0 in five innings as well.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kay Brokering, Hanna Adams and Summer Hayes all posted four hits on the day with Hayes driving in five runs.
  • Hannah Riddle extended her hitting streak to 18 games, hitting her ninth home run of the season in game one and adding a run-scoring single in the nightcap.
  • Hayes ripped her third home run of the season in game one.
  • Brokering and Riddle drove in three runs each for the tornado while Adams drove in a pair.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Riddle gave King the lead with a home run on the first pitch she saw, the third pitch of the bottom of the first inning.
  • Hayes then ripped a leadoff home run in the second inning, giving King a 2-0 lead after two innings.
  • Following a two-out single in the first inning, Leslie Odom retired 11 straight Valkyries until a one-out single in the fifth inning. However, that single was erased by a double play.
  • Brokering extended the lead in the third inning with a two-out single, scoring Kaycee Casteel.
  • The Tornado ended the contest with five runs in the fifth inning. Hayes drove in one with a single and Adams ended the contest with a two-run single, scoring Jenna Burnett and Danielle Parks.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado manufactured a pair of runs in the first inning, the second on a Hayes single up the middle that scored Brokering and put King ahead 2-0.
  • King extended their lead to 5-0 with three runs in the fourth inning, one coming on a Riddle single up the middle and another on a Brokering double off the fence in left center. Hayes then plated Brokering with a groundout.
  • The Tornado then ended the contest with three runs in the fifth inning. A Brokering double scored one before Riddle scored on a wild pitch.
  • Hayes gave King the 8-0 win with a single that scored Brokering.

  • Mackenzie Wenz led the Valkyries with two hits on the day, one in each contest.

  • King is scheduled to host Barton College at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the University of Mount Olive on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
  • Converse travels to Erskine College on Friday and Emmanuel College on Saturday.
