Tornado drop tough fought match at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The King University women's tennis team was defeated by Lees-McRae in the Conference Carolinas match up 6-3. The Tornado earned victories at number three doubles and numbers four and five singles but were unable to grab another couple wins to edge the Bobcats. Though they were unable to tallying the win the Tornado did not make it easy on the Bobcats taking three matches to three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Grabbing a win for the Tornado at number three doubles was Nia Gilliam and Alyssa Salazar 8-3, as King would enter the singles matches at a 2-1 disadvantage.
  • Ashley Salazar tabbed a win for the Tornado at number four singles over Lees-McRae's Taylor Bost 6-2, 6-2.
  • Following up at number five singles, Ashley Salazar also sailed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory posting the win over Bobcats' Rebecca Pierce.
  • Nia Gilliam battled at number two singles after dropping the first set 6-2 she forced the match to a third set taking set two 6-3 but falling in the final set 6-2 to Hillary Lutz.
  • Catherine Vezey also played a three set match against Lee's-McRae Mackenzie Langmade posting a 6-3 win in set one, then falling in the final two sets 7-5, 6-0.
  • At number six singles Haley Maloney fell in three sets, earning a 7-5 victory in set one, then dropping set two 6-4, and set three 6-0.

UP NEXT

  • The Tornado return home next for a Conference Carolinas match up against the University of Mount Olive scheduled for Friday at 2:00 p.m.
  • Lees-McRae will travel to Limestone College next in league play, on Tuesday.
