King comes back to defeat Converse for first league win

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University earned their first Conference Carolinas win of the season on Wednesday afternoon in impressive fashion as the Tornado defeated Converse College. Playing one player short the Tornado dug out of an 3-0 hole after doubles, winning all five singles matches to take the 5-4 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Converse took an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles before winning the third flight by default.
  • Trailing 4-0 because of the win by default for Converse at No.6 singles, Ashley Salazar got the Tornado win streak going. She took a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Margaret Pridemore at No. 3 singles.
  • At No. 1 singles, Marianne Hull earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alex Schlesener and Haley Maloney earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Taylor Barr.
  • Evening the score and winning the match for the Tornado were Nia Gilliam at No. 2 singles and Alyssa Salazar at No. 4 singles.
  • Gilliam won the first set over Kaitlin Kinght 6-4, but Kinght came back to take the second set 6-1. However, Gilliam bounced back, taking the final set 6-4.
  • Alyssa Salazar dropped the first set to Samantha Sheffield 6-4, but bounced back to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-2 for the win, giving King the 5-4 victory.
