Tornado come back to take win at UVa-Wise

WISE, Va. – The King University women's volleyball team jumped out of Conference Carolinas play to take on UVa-Wise, and as the first set indicated, the Tornado were in for a battle on Wednesday evening. King took the first 26-24 before the Cavaliers came back to win the next two sets. However, King forced a fifth set which the Tornado won 15-6 to take the 3-2 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King held a four point advantage numerous times throughout the first set, but the Cavaliers came back to even the score and eventually take a 22-20 lead. However, trailing 24-22, Cathy Scaniffe and Hanna Bug Smyth registered consecutive kills to even the score before King took the lead and a Casey Williams service ace gave King the 26-24 victory.
  • The Cavaliers grabbed the lead in the second set and didn't look back taking the frame 25-18 to even the match.
  • The third set went back-and-forth with 11 ties and six lead changes as King used a 4-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. However, the Cavaliers scored five of the final six points to take the set 25-23.
  • With the score even at 9-9 in the fourth set, Grace Underwood sparked the offense with a kill. Lauren Willoughby capped the 6-0 run that gave King a 15-9 advantage. The Tornado held the lead the rest of the way, taking the set 25-20.
  • The Tornado grabbed control of the fifth set from the first point, a Willoughby kill. The Cavaliers took timeouts as King took leads of 6-2 and 9-3, but it wasn't enough as Williams ended the match with an ace, giving King the 15-6 fifth set win.
  • Willoughby led King with 19 kills to go along with 16 digs for the double-double.
  • Scaniffe followed with 14 kills and nine digs.
  • Underwood followed with 13 kills on 22 attempts against one error for an attack percentage of .545. She also added seven digs and three blocks.
  • Ashton Beckner accounted for nine kills and seven blocks.
  • Olivia Underwood posted a double-double, accounting for 36 assists and 14 digs.
  • Amy Serowski led the defense with 21 digs while Williams added 15 digs and three service aces.

FOR THE FOES

  • Karley Allen led the Cavaliers with 19 kills and 13 digs for the double-double.
  • Amanda Auxier and Santana Bishop added 10 kills apiece.
  • Erin Anderson led the defense with 19 kills while Erin Lee accounted for 17 and Kelsey smith chipped in with 14.
  • Chandler Rouse posted 46 assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For Beckner, the seven blocks marks a career-high.
  • The double-doubles for Willoughby and Olivia Underwood mark their eighth and sixth of the season, respectively. Willoughby also set a season-best with 16 digs.
  • Serowski matched a career-high from earlier this season with 21 digs. She also reached the 20-dig plateau for the third time this season.
  • With 14 kills, Scaniffe set a career-high, topping her previous best mark of 13 which was set in the season-opener.

UP NEXT

  • King returns to Conference Carolinas action again on Friday night when they travel to Limestone College for a 7:00 p.m. first serve. King then travels to Converse College on Saturday afternoon.
