ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University hosted the second annual Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Open where eight teams met to duel it out for the top spot. King College was one of three nationally-ranked teams to participate and took third place after going 2-1 as a team.
King battled from behind against the University of Indianapolis in the third-place match, stealing the decision with victories from seniors Frank Morgan (Maynardville, Tenn.) and Dondricus Anderson (Macon, Ga.). Indianapolis jumped out to a 13-0 lead after the first four bouts. Freshman Jeremy Miller (Madison, Tenn.) began to turn the tide when he pinned Bryce Givens (6:25) in the 157-pound match. Junior Patrick Spano (Tampa, Fla.) followed with a 6-1 decision over Jeff Weiss and sophomore Matt Bogardus (Nyack, N.Y.) brought the Tornado within a point after a decisive 8-2 win over Dustin Parrish. After Brandon Tressler fell in the 184-pound match, King found themselves down by four points with two bouts remaining but Morgan and Anderson waiting in the wings.
Morgan demonstrated dominance with a first-period pin just 1:41 into the frame over Kevin Gaughan to jump the Greyhounds in the score column, 18-16. Anderson closed the deal with a 3-1 win by decision over Evan Wooding to lead King to the 21-16 victory and a third place finish.
Morgan, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II at 197 pounds, went a perfect 3-0 on at the Mid-Atlantic Duals with a major decision and a pin. Anderson finished 2-1 with a pair of victories by decision. Bogardus also finished 2-1, his only loss to Ashland's Bryson Hall in a close 3-2 decision.
The No. 11 Tornado will ready itself for a dual meet with St. Andrew's Presbyterian College (Laurinburg, N.C.) beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Jan. 18. They will follow that meet with another road adventure on Jan. 22 to take on Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri.
