BRISTOL, Tenn. - The King College women's wrestling team split a pair of matches Saturday as the Lady Tornado, ranked No. 3 nationally, opened with a 27-16 win over Missouri Valley College followed by a 35-9 setback against No. 1 Oklahoma City University.
Marina Lambert (Chesapeake, Va.) closed things in the Oklahoma City contest out with a pin in just 21 seconds for King in the 90-kilogram match.
Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) scored the first points for King at 51-kilograms, however after that match Oklahoma City enjoyed an 11-1 lead. Another point went to King from Haylee Childs (Lakeland, Fla.) at 59-kilograms. Shana Prifte (Shoreham, N.Y.) also tacked on a point for the Lady Tornado in the 63-kilogram match. Tasha Galarza (New Britain, Conn.) added a point in her 72-kilogram match.
In King's first two meetings of the season against Oklahoma City's varsity team, the Lady Tornado squad was defeated 29-8 and 32-10.
King started the day with a 27-16 win over Missouri Valley College. The first two matches were forfeits, one for each team. Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) won her 51-kilogram match over Shona Colbert 3-0 and 3-1 and King did not trail the rest of the match. Angelina Miranda (Poinciana, Fla.) won at 55-kilograms 1-0, 0-1 and 3-1.
Danielle Curlis stopped the winning ways for King as she beat Childs in three periods. Alli Ragan (Carbondale, Ill.) and Prifte won the next two matches, also needing three periods.
Brittany Jones and Venus Brown picked up points for Missouri Valley before Marina Lambert (Chesapeake, Va.) pinned Melissa Bublitz to close out the match in the second period.
After the day of wrestling, King moved to 9-4 in dual matches while Oklahoma City remained undefeated at 16-0. Oklahoma City used six victories via pins in a 46-0 result over Missouri Valley. It was the third time Oklahoma City shutout an opponent in a dual match this season. Missouri Valley's dual match record fell to 2-6.
Next for King will be the WCWA Nationals Jan. 29 at Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. Last year the Lady Tornado finished 10th at the event in the program's first appearance.
