James Steed serves as the Compliance Graduate Assistant (GA) at King University, bringing a diverse background in compliance, legal research, athletics administration, and sales to the Tornado staff. Steed supports all aspects of NCAA compliance operations, including monitoring, education, and rules interpretation, while assisting with day-to-day department operations and student-athlete eligibility processes.
Steed joins King University following an impactful year as Athletics Compliance Extern at the University of Mississippi Department of Athletics, where he authored case briefs on NCAA infractions, analyzed potential violations, and helped keep coaches updated on shifting NCAA legislation. He became proficient in compliance software platforms such as NCAA Compliance Assistant, ARMS, and Teamworks, and assisted in drafting waivers for student-athletes. Steed was also present on gamedays for football, men’s, and women’s basketball to ensure compliant operations and the proper check-in of player guests.
Steed’s experience extends into both the legal and business realms. As a Legal Intern with Gaines and Associates in Memphis, he consolidated and digitized client files, assisted in drafting probate documents, will codicils, and executor’s deeds, and contributed to the ongoing maintenance of client estate plans. He also gained valuable insurance industry experience as a Casualty Brokerage Intern at Amwins Insurance Brokerage in Dallas, where he drafted quotes and facilitated deals between insurance companies and businesses.
Steed’s sports business experience includes roles with LEARFIELD Amplify, the Memphis Redbirds, and Memphis 901 FC, where he contributed to ticket sales, corporate partnership activation, and gameday operations, generating over $1 million in combined ticket revenue. His early career also included service as a FANgineer for Bulldog Suites at Mississippi State, working as a gameday ambassador and liaison for athletic events.
A native of Germantown, Tennessee, Steed is a Juris Doctor candidate at the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he is involved with the Mississippi Sports Law Review, Student Bar Association, and several law societies. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance with a minor in Political Science from Mississippi State University, where he was recognized for leadership as Pi Kappa Alpha External Vice President and a Mr. MSU Finalist. Steed is also an Eagle Scout, reflecting his longstanding commitment to service and leadership.
