For the first time in three decades, someone with a last name other than Toomey was chosen to lead the King University women's volleyball program in 2014. Cephas started his tenure leading the history-rich program to back-to-back Conference Carolinas North Division championships.
Tornado closed the season strong in 2015, winning 11 of their final 13 matches, including a seven-match winning streak. King's only two losses came to conference tournament runner-up Limestone, including a 3-1 defeat in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinal match. The Tornado went 19-13 overall, incduding a mark of 11-5 in Conference Carolinas play. The Tornado clinched their North Division title with a 3-2 win over Barton where the Tornado trailed at home 14-10 in the fifth set, but King rolled off six straight points to defeat the division runners-up and take their second straight title. Lauren Willoughby was selected first team All-Conference Carolinas while Ashleigh Manke, Sarah Collins and Amy Serowski all were named to the third team. Willoughby was also selected Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year.
In 2014, Cephas led King to a 12-4 Conference Carolinas record as the Tornado advanced to the Conference Carolinas Tournament final for the second straight season. King won their final four regular season matches, including a 3-1 win at Erskine in the regular season finale that handed the Conference Carolinas champion Flying Fleet their second league loss in as many nights. King then ran their winning streak to six matches with win in the conference tournament quarter and semifinals before falling at Erskine to end their season with a 22-11 record. Summer Kremer led NCAA Division II in kills and was named Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and was selected a Daktronics third team All-American. She also garnered first team all-conference and first team Daktronics All-Region honors. Kremer was also honorable mention All-Region by the AVCA. Payton Tipton joined her on the all-conference first team while Grace Underwood, Olivia Underwood and Lauren Willoughby garnered second team honors. Tipton was selected Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the year while Kremer was selected Capital One Academic All-District before earning Capital One Academic All-American second team honors.
Cephas is no stranger to King volleyball as he captained the men's team for two years, and was named Conference Carolinas Libero of the Year during his senior campaign. He was also a student assistant coach for the women's program during his senior season at King. Following his graduation, Cephas served as a women's volleyball assistant from 2011-13 under head coach Chris Toomey.
Cephas has a plethora of coaching experience at many different levels, most recently with the King women's volleyball program. Prior to that he was the head coach at Sullivan North High School where he led the Raiders to a first place district finish and third place regional finish in 2011. He has also coached club volleyball for NETVC as well as coaching both boys and girls junior Olympic level teams.
