Andrew Montague enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at King University. He is involved with all facets of the Tornado baseball program, including recruiting, strength and conditioning, development of defensive play by the catchers and outfielders, while also assisting with the hitters.
The Tornado won seven straight games early in the 2018 season that was highlighted by a third place finish in the Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship. King finished fifth in the league and earned wins over perennial power Mount Olive and 20th-ranked Belmont Abbey. Octavio Mirabal earned second team All-Conference Carolinas honors. The 2017 season saw the Tornado hit .298 with the help of Montague, ranking fifth in a highly competitive Conference Carolinas. Catcher Bubba Ruiz was selected Conference Carolinas Freshman of the year and garnered second team All-Conference Carolinas.
In 2016, Montague helped the Tornado offense to a team average that was second in Conference Carolinas (.320) and slugging percentage that was third best in the league (.461). Outfielder Ryan Whitt led Conference Carolinas with a .430 batting average, garnering first team all-conference honors and All-Region recognition, while catcher Mark Hencken and infielder Ryan Sattz also earned all-conference honors.
In addition to his duties at King, Montague has had the opportunity to serve as an assistant coach in the Valley Baseball League for multiple organizations. In 2016, he served as an assistant coach for the Charlottesville TomSox based out of Charlottesville, Va. In 2015, Montague served as the Associate Head Coach for the Woodstock River Bandits, where he was primarily in charge of developing the offense and catchers, while also serving as 3rd base coach during games. In 2014, while in charge of the pitching staff, he led the River Bandits arms to a third-best finish in the league in earned run average (3.49). Montague was fortunate enough to coach a few players now in the professional ranks, Andrew ‘Opie’ Brodbeck (St. Louis Cardinals) and Mike O’Reilly (St. Louis Cardinals) while with Woodstock.
Prior to his time at King, Montague was the head varsity coach for Massanutten Military Academy for two years, helped coach American Legion Post 310 Junior Legion to a State Runner-Up finish, served as an assistant coach for the Whitecaps 17U travel showcase team, and has worked various camps at the Naval Academy and throughout the Tidewater area.
Montague played at Virginia Military Institute under Marlin Ikenberry for four years, serving as a primary catcher for three years and a bullpen arm partially during junior year, making the full-time shift to the mound as a bullpen arm in his final collegiate season. During his tenure at VMI, Montague led the Big South Conference in appearances for much of his senior year (ranked tied for fourth after the conference tournament), and his 29 outings are tied for the second-most in VMI single-season history.
A native of Portsmouth, Va., Montague graduated from VMI in May 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. He currently resides in Bristol, Tenn.
