Mikhail Pocknett being named the men's Offensive Player of the Week,
Seth Cullen earning men's Defensive Player of the Week, and
Ashley Allen being awarded women's Defensive Player of the Week.
Allen, a senior from Sterling, Virginia, had a big week defensively for the Tornado, averaging 11.0 rebounds in two games. She also came up with seven steals and two blocks. She started with 10 rebounds, three steals and a block at Lees-McRae before snaring 12 rebounds, four steals and one block against Southern Wesleyan. It is her first Conference Carolinas weekly award this season and her second Defensive Player of the Week award in her career.
Pocknett, a sophomore from Wilmington, North Carolina, averaged a double-double to help King clinch a share of the northwest division title with a pair of wins last week. He started with 29 points, 18 rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block while shooting 8-for-11 from the floor in a win at Lees-McRae. He also went 13-for-16 from the free throw line. He closed the week with 28 points, eight rebounds and two steals in a win over Southern Wesleyan. He went 11-for-14 from the floor. The sophomore closed the week with averages of 28.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting 76.0 percent from the floor. In Saturday's win, he reached 1,000 points in his career, having played in only 52 games. It is his third player of the week award this year.
Cullen, a sophomore from Cary, North Carolina, was solid defensively for the Tornado in a pair of wins last week. He averaged 13.5 rebounds per game, including 10.0 defensive boards per contest. He added one steal and two blocks. He started with 14 rebounds and a steal in a win over Lees-McRae as King clinched a share of the northwest division title. he then closed with 13 rebounds and two blocks in a win over Southern Wesleyan. This is Cullen's first weekly award in his career.
Both the women's and men's basketball teams will be back in action tomorrow, February 11 at home. The women's team will tip off against Belmont Abbey at 5:30 p.m. and the men's game will follow against the Crusaders.
