King opens 2025 season at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The King University baseball team started their season with a nonconference doubleheader Saturday, dropping both games to Carson-Newman.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Eagles scored 12 runs in the first two innings, taking an early commanding 12-0 lead.
  • King got their first hit of the game in the fourth, when Starrs led off with a single to left field, though a double play and strikeout saw the inning come to an abrupt end.
  • Starrs picked up his second hit of the day in the sixth, hitting a two-out double to right field before a swinging strikeout ended the inning.
  • Conner Hyatt added a hit in the seventh, but the Tornado were unable to post a run, as the Eagles pitching held them off the board, with Carson-Newman winning 17-0 after scoring a run in the sixth, three in the seventh and one in the eighth.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Eagles took another early lead, scoring seven runs in the first three innings.
  • In the fourth inning, the Tornado were able to get a pair of runs, as Borchardt drew a leadoff walk before Starrs hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to get the Tornado on the board, 7-2.
  • After Carson-Newman scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth, King scored two runs on three hits in the fifth, including RBI singles by Borchardt and Starrs, with Borchardt driving in Jacob Eargle and Starrs driving in Jose Ruiz to make it 9-4.
  • King added one more run in the sixth, as Joey Armunategui led off with a double to left center field, later scoring when Eargle grounded out, picking up his first RBI of the season to make the score 9-5.
  • King went down in order in the seventh, falling 9-5 in the second game of the doubleheader.
