Three Tornado earn titles at King Open

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Jamarius Koshko, Trent Mahoney and Clint Morrisette all won championships Sunday to lead the King University men's wrestling team at the annual King Open.

THE BASICS
LOCATION: Student Center Complex, Kline Gymnasium; Bristol, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Koshko won the title at 149 pounds, starting his day in the preliminary rounds with a first period pin. He would go on to win his next three matches via first period pin before earning a 6-5 decision over Cael Alderman of Newberry in the semifinals. He then won the finals match via forfeit to take the championship.
  • Mahoney also won the championship at 165 pounds, with three wins via pin, including a first period pin of Zackery Wells of Shorter. After taking his quarterfinal and semifinal matches via pin, he won the title match via medical forfeit.
  • At 174 pounds, the championship match featured a pair of King wrestlers, with Morrisette earning a 23-10 major decision over Brad Mahoney to take the title. Morrisette won his first match of the day 14-2 before winning a 22 second pin in the second round.
  • He then took his quarterfinal match 4-2 before winning a tech fall over Toby Abbott of West Liberty to advance to the championship match.
  • B. Mahoney won his first two matches of the day via bonus points, including a 4:10 pin of Jack Willen of Cumberlands. After a 3-1 in in the quarterfinals, he won his semifinal match in 1:13 to advance to the finals match.
  • Ethan Lopez finished second at 184 pounds, winning his first two matches via pin, including a first round win over Edison Morales of Belmont Abbey. He took his quarterfinal match via major decision before taking a medical forfeit win in the semifinals. His lone loss came in the finals via injury default.
  • Joe Bertrand was third at 165 pounds, with a win via pin, a win via tech fall, and two wins via major decision, including in the third-place match, where he won 18-8 over Riley Brewer of Andrew College.
  • Nathan Coley finished fifth at 197 pounds, winning three of his four matches on the day, including a 16-1 tech fall win over Andrew College's Christian Preston. In the fifth-place match, he won via pin in 6:51 over David Emfinger of Midway University.
  • Roberto Garcia finished seventh at 125 pounds, with all of his wins coming via pin. He started with consecutive pins of Kelton Bailey and Joseph Bruscino before dropping an overtime decision to Larre Rhodes of Bluefield State.
  • He went 1-1 in the wrestleback rounds, ending up in the seventh-place match. He finished the day with a first period pin of Caiden Harbert of West Liberty.
  • Also competing at 125 pounds, Adan Estrada placed third, winning his first three matches of the day, including a quarterfinal pin of Cumberland's JaRi Campbell. After falling 6-5 in the semifinals, he won the third-place match via forfeit.
  • Alex Fernandez III placed fifth at 133 pounds, going 6-1 on the day. He started with a tech fall win over Emory & Henrys Johnathan Almany, later winning by injury default and tech fall before winning two more consolation matches.
  • In the fifth-place match, he won a 4-2 decision over teammate Nico Crosnoe. Crosnoe went 4-2 on the day. He won his first two matches via major decision before falling in the quarterfinals. After a pair of consolation wins, he faced Fernandez III in the fifth-place match.
  • Ashtan Hendricks placed eighth at 141 pounds, with a win by pin over Tony Wood of West Liberty to start the day. After dropping his second-round match, he won three straight consolation matches before falling in the consolation semifinals, ending his day.
