BRISTOL, Tenn. – Following an outstanding senior season,
Michael Mays was selected second team All-Conference Carolinas on Thursday when the league announced their award winners. Mays ranks second in the league in scoring with an average of 24.0 points per game.
Mays garners all-conference honors for the second time as he was selected third team all-conference a season ago. His average of 24.0 points per game ranks second in the league and sixth in NCAA Division II.
During his senior season, Mays scored 671 points, the third most in school history behind Jordan Floyd and Mark Dockery. That point total also ranked fourth in the country. In his career, Mays scored 1,334 points in three season's ranking him 19th in school history.
This season, Mays posted 19 games with at least 20 points, including seven outbursts of at least 30 points. He poured in a career-high 38 points on November 30 in a win at rival Lees-McRae College. On February 7 he knocked down seven triples against Belmont Abbey College, the fourth-most triples in a game in school history.
He was one of the most prolific free throw shooters in the country as he led the nation in free throw percentage. He is currently third in NCAA Division II with a free throw percentage of 93.5. That percentage is the new school record as he is the only Tornado to shoot better than 90 percent from the charity stripe in a season. His 170 free throw makes ranks third in school history for a season. Mays also made 219 field goals, ranking him 11th in the country as the mark led Conference Carolinas.
