King sweeps through the NCWWC Region II Championships

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's wrestling swept the top spot at each weight class in Saturday's National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) Region II Championships. King won the tournament as all 15 entries finished in the top three and qualified for the NCWWC National Championships.

LOCATION: Student Center Complex; Bristol, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 1 Jessica Corredor won both of her matches to take the 101-pound crown while sixth-ranked Avery Kibelbek finished third, gong 1-1 on the day.
  • At 109 pounds, top-ranked Sage Mortimer finished first, defeating third-ranked Dianna Holmes in the championship bout.
  • Holmes went 1-1 on the day to take a runner-up finish.
  • King had the top two finishes at 116 and 123 pounds as well as third-ranked Samara Chavez defeated teammate and fourth-ranked Danielle Garcia in the championship bout at 116 pounds.
  • Chavez went 2-0 while Garcia was 2-1 on the day.
  • At 123 pounds, fourth-ranked Vayle-Rae Baker defeated seventh-ranked teammate Melanie Mendoza in the championships bout.
  • Baker went 3-0 on the day while Mendoza was 2-1.
  • Second-ranked Montana DeLawder won all three of her matches by fall to win the 130-pound weight class.
  • King again took the top two spots at 136 pounds as second-ranked Ana Luciano defeated teammate and fourth-ranked Viktorya Torres in the championship bout.
  • Luciano went 4-0 on the day while Torres went 3-1 with a 10-0 technical fall over third-ranked Paige Wehrmeister of Presbyterian College in the semifinals.
  • At 143 pounds, top-ranked Ashlynn Ortega earned a pair of technical fall victories to take home the title.
  • At 155 pounds, sixth-ranked Tiffani Baublitz earned both of her wins by fall to finish first.
  • Second-ranked Chey Bowman earned a technical fall win and a pin to win the 170-pound weight class.
  • At 191 pounds, Nia Crosdale won a pair of decisions to finish first and give King the sweep.
FOR THE FOES
  • Emmanuel College finished second and Presbyterian College finished third.
  • Limestone University came in fourth.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • King is the second team to win all 10 weight classes in the three year history of the NCWWC Regional Championships. McKendree University accomplished the feat in the first year.
