Offense leads King to sweep of SWU

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team earned another Conference Carolinas sweep on Wednesday afternoon. The Tornado took game one from Southern Wesleyan 6-5 before winning game two 12-1.

KING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Camryn Haag ripped three doubles on the day and drove in four.
  • Lauren Lawson hit a grand slam in game two, driving in five in the contest.
  • Haylee Dye went 4-for-4 on the day with three runs scored and drove in two.
  • Carly Turner hit a home run in game two as she went 3-for-3. She added a single and a triple.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The opening game was a pitcher's duel in the early going until the Tornado offense erupted in the third inning.
  • Erin Foster drove in Peyton Day with a double before back-to-back singles from Rikkelle Miller and Dye drove in runs.
  • Haag made it a 5-0 Tornado lead with a two-run double.
  • The Warriors got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth before King loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning.
  • However, King couldn't push a run across.
  • Southern Wesleyan scored another unearned run in the fifth, but Turner got out of the bases loaded jam.
  • Haag started the bottom of the fifth with a double and later scored on a Day sacrifice fly, giving King a 6-2 lead.
  • The Warriors plated three runs, two on a two-out, two-run single from Delaney Byers to pull within 6-5.
  • King threatened to add on some runs in the sixth, but left the bases loaded again.
  • Marleigh Duncan then retired the side in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the year and give King the 6-5 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • King jumped ahead with three runs in the opening frame as Haag ripped a two-out double that scored Samantha Helms and Dye to cap the inning.
  • Southern Wesleyan manufactured a run in the second inning before King broke the game open in the third inning.
  • Dye drove in Turner with a single before Lawson launched a grand slam, extending the lead to 8-1.
  • Turner started the fourth inning with a home run before a Helms single scored Miller.
  • Lawson drove in Helms with a double before King added another run on a wild pitch to take a 12-1 lead.
  • Nikole Counts made that stand up as she retired the side in the fifth, giving King the 12-1 win.

  • Byers also drove in two.
UP NEXT
  • King closes the regular season on Friday and Saturday with home doubleheaders against Erskine College and Emmanuel College. First pitch each day is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
  • Southern Wesleyan travels to Chowan University on Friday and Barton College on Saturday.
