Second half downs Tornado at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. – The King University women's basketball team dropped a nonconference contest at Emory & Henry College on Thursday evening. The Tornado held a lead at halftime, but the Wasps used a big third quarter to take the lead. King couldn't recover as Emory & Henry took the contest 80-61.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
  • Emory & Henry scored the first five points before an Ashley Allen layup pulled King back within 8-6 in the opening minutes.
  • The Wasps later led 20-13 before King went on a run over the final two minutes of the period.
  • Tori Smiley and Alexa Gramann made back-to-back layups before a pair of Jaden Potts free throws pulled King within one.
  • A Smiley jump shot gave King the lead with 20 seconds remaining, but the Wasps beat the buzzer to take a 22-21 lead into the second period.
Second Period
  • The Emory & Henry run continued as they scored the first four points of the period before a Le'Aije Ellington layup sparked a King run.
  • Allen and Jordan Weir converted layups, and Weir later made a free throw to give King a 28-26 lead following the 7-0 run.
  • The Wasps answered with seven straight points, but King again closed the period strong.
  • King scored the final six points of the period as Jaelyn West made a layup and three-point shot.
  • Brianna Dunbar then converted a free throw to give King a 36-33 lead at the break.
Third Period
  • The Emory & Henry offense heated up in the third period, outscoring King 29-15, starting with the first five points of the quarter.
  • Jhayda McKinney knocked down a pair of triples, but the Wasps closed the period on a 12-5 run, including seven straight to take a 62-51 lead to the final period.
Fourth Period
  • King tried to come back early in the period, but the Wasps extended the lead to 73-56 following a 7-0 spurt.
  • The Tornado couldn't recover as Emory & Henry took the contest 80-61.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ellington led the Tornado with 13 points while Smiley added 10.
  • West chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hannah Spainhour led Emory & Henry with 24 points and eight rebounds.
  • Grace Glance added 16 points and five rebounds.
  • Emma Santoro and Breanna Yarber chipped in with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Each added six rebounds.
