Tornado top Wildcats for first win of season

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The King University men's volleyball team picked up a nonconference win over Fort Valley State University, 3-0 Saturday afternoon. Joshua Kim led the Tornado with 11 kills while JT Deppe had 32 set assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • The first set was close early on, with neither team gaining a lead larger than four, which came at 8-4 when Suetonius Harris recorded a kill.
  • After the Wildcats reeled off three straight points, the Tornado broke the streak off a service error, then had back-to-back kills from Diego Marcano to take an 11-8 lead.
  • The rest of the set consisted of King scoring a pair of points, followed by one for the Wildcats.
  • King scoring six of the final eight points, including a pair of kills from Kim to take the set 25-17.
Second Set
  • The second set was just as close as the first early on until the Tornado scored seven unanswered points to take a 15-9 lead.
  • Fort Valley State then scored four points of their own before Kim recorded a kill, making the score 16-13.
  • After a Wildcats service error, Harris picked up one of his four service aces, making the score 19-15.
  • The Tornado then scored four of the next five points before ending the set on a thunderous kill from Kellan Kennedy, giving King the 25-17 win.
Third Set
  • King wasted no time in the third set, scoring five points in a row to race out to an early 6-2 lead.
  • A little while later, the Tornado would score four straight points, including three straight aces from Harris to make the score 14-5.
  • After King scored three consecutive points to take an 18-7 lead, the Wildcats and Tornado returned to exchanging points, with King dealing the final blow on a Chance Hoffman kill to close things out, giving King the set 25-15, and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kim was the only player on either team to finish with double-digit kills, recording 11 along with four digs.
  • Marcano finished with seven kills, while Kennedy had six and Harris recorded five.
  • Deppe finished with 32 set assists along with five digs.
  • Noah Melendez led the Tornado in digs with seven.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kennedy's six kills ties his career high that was set against Purdue Fort Wayne.
  • Harris finished with four aces, a new career-high.
FOR THE FOES
  • Jaxson Hicks had eight kills for the Wildcats, along with five digs and a pair of block assists.
  • Justin Yates had 22 set assists to go along with three digs and a kill.
  • This was the first game in program history for Fort Valley State.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado will be on the road for the next few matches, as they take on Harvard University Friday at 7 p.m. before facing Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday afternoon in a neutral site matchup.
