Ben Delisle.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: King 1, Mars Hill 1 (2 OT)
LOCATION: Parks Field; Bristol, Tenn.
RECORDS: King 1-0-1; Mars Hill 1-1-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions wasted no time in scoring, as they posted a goal in the third minute, when Sebastian Bertilsson found Peter Plougmand, who put the ball in the top left corner of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
- King had a scoring chance three minutes later, when Josh Clements ripped off a shot that was blocked in front of the net. Delisle then took the rebound and fired off a shot of his own, which sailed wide of the net.
- Coming out of the halftime break, the Tornado consistently applied pressure to the Mars Hill defense, but it took until the 76th minute for King to break through as Delisle fed a beautiful pass to Lengyel, who deposited the ball in the back of the net to level the score.
- After the goal, the Tornado dominated the final 15 minutes of regulation, outshooting the Lions 5-1, including a near goal by Delisle that was steered away by the keeper.
- The first overtime saw much of the same as the final part of regulation, as the Tornado consistently possessed the ball, taking a pair of shots in the period, while not allowing a single shot from Mars Hill.
- King had a pair of chances to end the game in the second overtime, including in the 102nd minute when Weston Joyner hit the crossbar, then a rebound shot by Lengyel was saved by the goalkeeper. The Tornado had one final chance a short time later, but the keeper again made a save to preserve the 1-1 draw.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- It was a tale of two halves for the Tornado, who got outshot 5-4 in the first half but then proceeded to outshoot Mars Hill 18-6 in the second half and both overtime periods.
- Delisle took 10 shots for King, with four of those finding the gloves of the goalkeeper. He was on the field for 104 minutes, which is the third-most in his King career.
- While this was the first double overtime game of the season for King, they played three such games in the spring 2021 season, going 1-1-1. The win came on Feb. 22, a thrilling 1-0 win over Mount Olive.
