Winters delivers golden goal as Tornado slip past Pioneers

GREENVILLE, Tenn. – After trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes to play, the Tornado Women's Soccer team scored two goals, including a game-winning goal from Mackenzie Winters in overtime to pick up just their second ever win over Tusculum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After making two saves in the first 10 minutes, the Tornado conceded a goal in the 20th minute, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
  • Tusculum continued to buzz the net, racking up nine shots on goal in the first half, with Garcia netting eight saves.
  • King recorded a shot on goal in the final minute of the first half, when Desi White connected with a header, forcing the Pioneer goalkeeper to make her lone save of the half.
  • The Tornado broke through in the 71st minute when Presley Bacon took a pass from Megan Brody and found the back of the net for her first career goal.
  • After being unable to score the game-winner in regulation, the Tornado kicked off the first overtime period and immediately got a scoring chance thanks to passes from Anya Gross and Maggie Danroth that set up Winters, who slipped past the Pioneer defense
  • Winters took the ball into the box and struck a beautiful shot into the upper right corner of the net, beating the Tusculum goalkeeper and ending the game just 26 seconds into the extra period.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kristal Garcia recorded 11 saves on the night in her second game as a Tornado.
  • This was a historic win for King, as it is just the second time they have beaten Tusculum. Their last win over the Pioneers came on Oct. 18, 2008. It is also the first time that King has picked up a win in Greenville.
FOR THE FOES
  • The Pioneers took a season-high 20 shots, with 12 shots on goal.
  • Kenzie Ellenburg scored the Tusculum goal, her first of the season.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado will open Conference Carolinas play Saturday when they travel to Florence, S.C. to take on Francis Marion. Tusculum will travel south to take on Tampa on Friday night and Eckerd Sunday morning.
