Tornado pitching leads to sweep of Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The King University came away with two hard fought wins at Chowan University on Friday afternoon. Game one went to extra innings scoreless before King took the game 6-3 in eight innings. The Tornado then took game two 3-1 for the sweep.

KING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Rikkelle Miller posted two hits on the day, one home run. She also scored two runs and drove in two.
  • Erin Foster went 3-for-6, scored once and drove in two.
  • Carly Turner also posted three hits, drove in two and scored once.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • King threatened with a two-out single from Turner in the first inning, but that was it for the Tornado.
  • Nikole Counts started in the circle for the Tornado and didn't allow a base runner until the third inning.
  • The Hawks put runners on the corners in the third, but Counts left them there.
  • Foster had a single in the third for King and Turner came up with a base hit in the fourth, but that was all for the Tornado.
  • King put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but couldn't push the go-ahead run across.
  • Chowan loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but the Tornado turned a double play to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
  • Both teams went down in order in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
  • Turner laced a two-run single down the left field line to give King the lead.
  • Miller and Chelsea Sams came up with run-scoring singles before a Samantha Helms sacrifice fly made it 5-0.
  • Erin Foster stretched the King lead to 6-0 with a bases loaded walk.
  • Chowan responded with a run-scoring infield single, followed by a two-run single, cutting the King lead to 6-3.
  • Marleigh Duncan then relieved Counts and got a strikeout to give King the 6-3 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Miller got the Tornado on the board in the second inning with a leadoff home run.
  • Chowan tried to respond as they ripped a leadoff double in the second, but Turner stranded her on third.
  • King extended their lead to 2-0 on a Foster single that scored Azlee Sells in the third inning.
  • The Tornado looked to blow the game open in the fourth as they loaded the bases, but the Warriors got out of the inning unscathed.
  • Three straight one-out singles for Chowan in the fifth, cut the King lead to 2-1, but the Tornado got that run back in the sixth.
  • Tinsley Thompson started a two-out rally with a double and later scored on an error, giving King a 3-1 lead.
  • Chowan got a pair of two-out runners in the seventh as Duncan relieved Turner.
  • Just as in game one, Duncan got a strikeout to give King the 3-1 win.
