King offense held down by stout TU defense

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball team took to the road to face Tusculum University for the second time this season. However, the Tornado ran into a stout Pioneer defense on Tuesday night as Tusculum took the 3-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • The King offense struggled to get going in the first set, hitting negative while the Tusculum offense hit better than .400.
  • Tusculum went on a 7-2 run, including scoring five-of-six points to open up a 15-9 lead.
  • The Pioneer offense continued to hit well, scoring 10 of the final 15 points to take the set 25-14.

Second Set

  • The Tusculum offense didn't slow down in the second set, hitting .464 and jumping out to a 4-0 lead.
  • On the other side, the Pioneer defense kept the King offense pinned down, holding the Tornado to a zero attack percentage in the second set.
  • King pulled within 9-7, but the Pioneers closed the set on a 16-1 run to take the set 25-11.

Third Set

  • The Pioneers came out hot again in the third set, opening up an 8-2 lead following a 6-0 run.
  • However, Tristyn Lozano tried to get the Tornado offense going with a kill.
  • Sydney Pigage later served up an ace before Cathy Scaniffe evened the score at eight, ending the King 6-0 run.
  • Nevertheless, Tusculum regained the lead with a 4-0 spurt.
  • King later scored six straight points again, this time to take a 16-15 lead.
  • The teams then went back-and-forth before King had a chance at set point at 24-23.
  • However, the Pioneers scored the final three points, taking the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Julie Ward led King with six kills and six digs.
  • Kayley Holtzclaw and Scaniffe followed with three kills each as Scaniffe added four digs.
  • Pigage led the defense with eight digs and Keri Ricker handed out 14 assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Gabby Gray led Tusculum with 13 kills and nine digs while Emiah Burrowes posted 12 kills and seven digs.
  • Elise Carmichael handed out 24 assists and Carly Sosnowski recorded 15 digs.

UP NEXT

  • King returns home to face Limestone College. First serve from the Student Center Complex is slated for 7:00 p.m.
  • Tusculum stays at home to take on Lincoln Memorial University on Friday night.
