Tornado fall at league-leading Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The King University women's volleyball team took to the road to face Barton College, and the Tornado got off to a hot start. King won the first set, but the Bulldogs came back, taking the final three sets to win the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado got off to a hot start, hitting .325 in the first set.
  • King opened up a 7-2 lead following an Emma Carico kill which forced a timeout from Barton.
  • Barton came back to get within 11-10, but Tristyn Lozano started a quick King spurt with a kill.
  • The teams traded points down the stretch, but the Tornado came away with the 25-19 victory with a service ace from Amy Serowski.
  • However, the Bulldog defense dug in and slowed down the Tornado offense in the second set.
  • The Bulldogs opened up a 13-9 lead before King called timeout, and mounted a comeback.
  • King scored five-of-six points, pulling within 16-15, but the Bulldogs answered with a 5-1 run of their own.
  • Barton then closed the set on a 4-1 run, evening the match with the 25-19 victory.
  • The third set started with five straight points for the Tornado, the final on a block from Lozano and Victoria Gause.
  • However, Barton answered with a 7-2 run that evened the score at 7-7.
  • The Bulldog offense kept rolling, scoring 11 of the final 12 points of their 25-14 win.
  • Barton broke an 8-8 tie in the fourth set with a 6-0 to gain separation.
  • The Bulldogs didn't look back from there, taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
  • Cathy Scaniffe led the tornado with 12 kills while Becca Huddleston followed with 10 kills and seven digs.
  • Abby Anderson handed out 32 assists to go along with five digs.
  • Serowski led the defense with 17 digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Kaytlin Elkins led Barton with 16 kills and hit .306 in the match.
  • Angelica Acevedo posted 29 assists and added 10 digs.
  • Riley Bane led the defense with 18 kills.

UP NEXT

  • King stays on the road to take on the University of Mount Olive on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
  • Barton hosts Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon.
