Two big innings lift Lenoir-Rhyne over King

BRISTOL, Tenn. – On what was a beautiful day in Bristol, the King University baseball team took on one of the top team in the Southeast Region on Wednesday, Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Bears, scored three early runs, and the Tornado stayed with the Bears until the seventh inning. Lenoir-Rhyne plated four runs that inning en route to their 7-2 victory.

KING HIGHLIGHTS

  • Douglas led the King offense, driving in both runs and going 2-for-4 on the day.
  • Hunt also added two hits on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bears loaded the bases with one out and scored one run on a groundball in the infield before Thompson made in a 3-0 game with a two-run single.
  • The score remained the same until the Tornado scratched across one run in the fourth inning. Hencken started the frame with a double and later scored on a two-out double from Douglas.
  • King added another in the sixth when Whitt laced a leadoff double. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Douglas groundout, pulling King within 3-2 after six.
  • The Bears broke the game open in the seventh, scoring one on a Dean single through the left side. Dishmond drove in a pair with another single through the left side and Perkins made in a 7-2 lead with a run scoring single to right center.
  • Mitch Stophel then got three straight outs to leave the bases loaded.
  • The Tornado couldn't get the offense going over the final three innings as the Bears took the contest 7-2.

FOR THE FOES

  • Hamrick and De La Rosa led the Bears with two hits each with Hamrick scoring twice.
  • Dishmond, Perkins and Thompson all drove in two runs apiece.

  • King returns to Conference Carolinas play when they travel to Erskine College. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. in Due West, S.C.
