King takes split with Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The King University baseball team completed their doubleheader with the University of Charleston that was suspended last month on Monday afternoon. The Tornado took game one 8-3 behind big offensive days from Mark Hencken and Preston Douglas. The Golden Eagles came back by taking game two 5-1.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hencken scored four runs, going 2-for-4 in the opening game.
  • Douglas added three runs batted on three hits in the opening game before collecting one hit in game two.
  • Ryan Whitt and Ryan Sattz both drove in a pair in the opening game while Whitt posted two hits in the nightcap.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game one was suspended on February 20 with King leading the Golden Eagles 2-0 in the middle of the third inning.
  • In the early going, Whitt drove in Hencken with a single to center in the first inning and again drove in Hencken with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, putting King up 2-0.
  • The game resumed on Monday, and Charleston grabbed the lead in the sixth inning when they plated three runs. The Golden Eagles scored one on a groundout and another on a single from Anthony Brunetti.
  • The Tornado regained the lead in the seventh when Douglas laced a two-run home run, giving King a 4-3 lead.
  • King then scored four runs in the eighth inning, one on a Douglas single and two on a Sattz single to left field.
  • P.J. O'Brien earned the complete game when he induced a double play, ended the contest with an 8-3 King victory.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Charleston got on the board in the second inning of game two when Tyler Itnyre drove in Jack Brunetti with a sacrifice fly. Anthony Brunetti made it a 2-0 lead with an RBI single.
  • King cut their deficit in half in the fifth inning when Whitt singled to drive in Marcus Schreiber who walked earlier in the inning. However, the Golden Eagles escaped the inning with the bases loaded to hold onto the lead.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Charleston plated three runs, two on a Matthew Houser single, giving the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead which they didn't relinquish, taking the contest by that score.

FOR THE FOES

  • Anthony Brunetti when 2-for-3 and drove in two in the second game after going 1-for-3 in the opener.
  • Houser also drove in a pair for Charleston.

  • The Tornado return home on Wednesday when they host Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
  • Charleston returns to action on Saturday when they host West Liberty University.
